Lions' five QBs create anomaly

The Detroit Free Press reports the Lions don't have a single victory, but they have had five quarterbacks attempt a pass in a season for the first time since at least the NFL-AFL merger in 1970. QB Daunte Culpepper was pulled in Thursday's 47-10 loss to Tennessee for the third time in four games since he signed with the Lions. QB Drew Henson, the two-sport phenom from Brighton, appeared in an NFL regular-season game for the first time since Thanksgiving Day four years ago, when he started for Dallas against Chicago. Redskins cut former league MVP Shaun Alexander

AP reports former NFL MVP Shaun Alexander was released by the Washington Redskins on Tuesday after getting only 11 carries in five games. Alexander was signed Oct. 14 after backup Ladell Betts sprained his knee in a loss to the St. Louis Rams. Betts has since returned and resumed the No. 2 role behind NFL leading rusher Clinton Portis. The Redskins replaced Alexander on the roster by signing defensive tackle Ryan Boschetti, who adds depth to an ailing defensive line. Read more

Williams among elite

The Charlotte Observer reports RB DeAngelo Williams continues to rise in the NFL rushing statistics. After gaining 100 yards for the fourth consecutive game, he ranks sixth in the league in rushing with 883 yards on 172 carries. Among the top 35 rushers, his 5.1 yards-per-carry average is second only to Brandon Jacobs (5.4) of the New York Giants. Williams is 117 yards from becoming the third 1,000-yard rusher in the Panthers' 14-year history. If he hits the mark, he'll become the team's first draft pick to do so. Read more

Backfield banged up after win over Browns

The Houston Chronicle reports the Texans can use the extra day off before they play Monday night against Jacksonville, as running backs Steve Slaton (chest, ribs), Ahman Green (knee) and Ryan Moats (ankle) are injured. Slaton showed his toughness by playing against Cleveland with his injuries, finishing with 21 carries for 73 yards; Green gained 39 yards on 13 carries, but after the game, coach Gary Kubiak said Green could be out for weeks.
