Manning needs help

The Indianapolis Star reports with 116 regular-season victories, QB Peyton Manning needs one to tie Joe Montana for sixth place on the league's career list. He won't get it without Sorgi's help. Once Tony Dungy pulls Manning, the game's in Jim Sorgi's hands. "He needs one, huh?'' Sorgi said. "So let's go get it.'' Manning certainly has done his part while compiling his 116 wins. He's a two-time league MVP and nine-time Pro Bowl selection. But one of those W's was compliments of Sorgi. In the final game of the '05 season, Manning barely worked up a sweat. He was on the field for three plays against Arizona before turning things over to Sorgi. He completed 20-of-30 passes for 207 yards with one touchdown and one interception as the Colts, who got a last-minute goal-line stand from the defense, won 17-13. Read more

Harris resigns from Jaguars

The Florida Times-Union reports James "Shack" Harris, a pro football pioneer on and off the field, became the first major victim of the Jaguars' losing season Tuesday when he resigned as the team's vice president of player personnel. Gene Smith, who was the director of pro and college personnel, was promoted to replace Harris, but the move raised almost as many questions as it answered. Neither owner Wayne Weaver nor Smith spoke to the media. Although the move was announced as a "resignation," coach Jack Del Rio called it an "ownership decision." Read more

Dolphins sign veteran linebacker Derek Smith

The Palm Beach Post reports the Dolphins on Tuesday signed veteran linebacker Derek Smith. The signing of Smith, 33, could signify concern about the availability of starting inside linebacker Channing Crowder, who missed Sunday's game in Kansas City because of an unspecified knee injury. Crowder has a history of right knee problems. Arthroscopic surgery ended his 2007 season with four games to go. At Sunday's game, he had a sleeve on his left knee. Read more

Marvel Smith is placed on injured-reserve list

The Post-Gazette reports OT Marvel Smith may have played his last game for the Steelers, and it occurred long before Halloween. The Steelers finally placed Smith, who has not dressed for the past 10 games, on injured reserve yesterday. They signed OT Jason Capizzi from the St. Louis Rams' practice squad to replace him on the roster. Read more
