Furrey tops 1,000 receiving yards

The Detroit Free Press reports WR Mike Furrey had a lot on his mind coming into Sunday's game against Dallas. He needed 16 receiving yards to reach 1,000 this season. And he was frustrated he had not signed a contract extension with the Lions. But he said all that melted away when the game started, and he certainly played like he had a clear head. He caught 11 passes for 102 yards and a touchdown in the Lions' 39-31 victory. Read more

Williams killed when limo sprayed with bullets

AP reports Denver Broncos CB Darrent Williams was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting early Monday, his limousine sprayed with bullets in downtown Denver. Team spokesman Jim Saccomano said police called him about 3 a.m. from the scene and told him three people had been shot, and the 24-year-old Williams had been killed. The killing came hours after the Broncos were eliminated from the playoff race. A little after 2 a.m., a white Hummer limousine was fired on from a vehicle that pulled up along its side, police spokesman Sonny Jackson said. As many as a dozen bullet holes were visible on the driver's side of the vehicle. Read more

Falcons finish 7-9, miss playoffs again

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports following a 24-17 season-ending loss to the Philadelphia Eagles' backups Sunday there was no word whether embattled Falcons HC Jim Mora would return as head coach. That will be determined this week, as team owner Arthur Blank, president and GM Rich McKay and possibly a handful of other trusted team officials will decide if Mora's declining three-year run should end. Spotty offense frustrates Dolphins' chances

The Palm Beach Post reports the Dolphins on Sunday capped their second losing season in three years in familiar fashion: not enough offense to back an impressive defensive effort. With Game 16 - a 27-22 loss to Indianapolis - out of the way a few hours before the start of the new year, Miami quickly turned its attention to the future. It's a future that is cloudy at best, even to its biggest star. "There are a lot of questions to be answered," DE Jason Taylor said. "There are a lot of things that are going to change, I'd imagine. That goes for all of us. We're all going to evaluate where we are and what we want to do from this point on." Read more
