Pittsburgh Steelers 01/05/2007 12:59 PMNFL.com wire reports HC Bill Cowher is returning to the Pittsburgh Steelers -- to say goodbye. The Steelers will begin a coaching search Jan. 5 to replace the departing Cowher, a person familiar with Cowher's status said. Cowher called owner Dan Rooney to tell him of his decision, and the team announced a Jan. 5 news conference not long after that. Cowher is expected to attend. The 49-year-old Cowher, one of the NFL's most recognizable faces and most successful coaches for 15 seasons, has weighed resigning since shortly after the Steelers finally won the Super Bowl last February following numerous near misses.Read more
Cleveland Browns 01/05/2007 10:37 AMThe Cleveland Plain Dealer reports the Browns fired receivers coach Terry Robiskie and offensive quality control coach Carl Crennel, nephew of Romeo Crennel, on Thursday, according to a team source. Soon to follow are running backs coach Dave Atkins and tight ends coach Ben Coates, the source said. Also, the Browns will interview former NFL backup quarterback Jason Garrett for the position of offensive coordinator, a Miami Dolphins source confirmed.Read more
Oakland Raiders 01/05/2007 8:19 AMThe Contra Costa Times reports Raiders managing general partner Al Davis fired HC Art Shell on Thursday night, four days after the Raiders established a franchise record for most losses in a season with their 14 defeats in 16 games. Shell, 60, departs less than 11 months after he was hired to replace Norv Turner. It marks the second time Davis has fired Shell. The two parted ways after the 1994 season on the heels of Shell posting a 56-41 record in five-plus seasons.Read more
Jacksonville Jaguars 01/05/2007 8:15 AMThe Florida Times-Union reports Mike Shula, who was fired as the Alabama coach after going 6-6 this year, will interview for one of the Jaguars' assistant coach job openings, team spokesman Dan Edwards said Thursday night. Edwards also confirmed a Miami Herald report that Dirk Koetter, who was fired as the Arizona State coach after going 40-34 in six seasons, interviewed with HC Jack Del Rio Thursday. Koetter also is a candidate for the offensive coordinator's job at the University of Miami.Read more
