Lewis taps former boss as new receivers coach

The Dayton Daily News reports Bengals HC Marvin Lewis leaned on an old friend to help keep the club's pass-catching department sturdy. Mike Sheppard, who has had stints with the Cleveland Browns, San Diego Chargers, Buffalo Bills, Baltimore Ravens, Seattle Seahawks and New Orleans Saints, was hired as the Bengals' wide receivers coach on Tuesday. He replaces Hue Jackson, who became the Atlanta Falcons' offensive coordinator on Jan. 8. Read more

Dolphins mindful of losing Capers

The Palm Beach Post reports while Dolphins officials huddled Thursday to settle on the list of finalists for the vacant head-coaching position, the team is prepared to fend off any advances made against de facto defensive coordinator Dom Capers. The Dolphins may take at least another day to whittle their list from 12 prospects to four or five candidates, according to a source close to the process. Those finalists would be subjected to a round of more football-intensive interviews. Read more

Former Packers boss may be on list

The Post-Gazette reports Chan Gailey might not be the final candidate for the Steelers' head-coaching job when he talks to team officials today at their UPMC offices on the South Side. The Steelers have made recent inquiries about former Green Bay Packers coach Mike Sherman, and they were trying to reach him the past two days. Sherman, the assistant head coach/offense for the Houston Texans, was en route from a second interview he had in Arizona Thursday for the Cardinals' head-coaching job. Read more

WRs Jackson, Hackett sit out

The Seattle Times reports the Seahawks could be very shorthanded at wide receiver on Sunday. WR Darrell Jackson and WR D.J. Hackett didn't practice Friday nor all week and will be game-time decisions, HC Mike Holmgren said. Holmgren had hoped to get Jackson in for one practice this week, but that didn't happen. "They are going to have to show me on Sunday that they can do something," Holmgren said. "It's kind of the way it's gone. I'm hopeful to have one or both of them on Sunday." Jackson has a sore toe and Hackett a sprained ankle. If neither can play, WR Deion Branch and WR Nate Burleson are the expected starters and rookie WR Ben Obomanu could see his first game action.
