Zimmer, Mora to talk to Chargers

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports in a surprise twist, newly hired Falcons defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer will interview for the vacant San Diego Chargers head coaching post, according to an NFL source with knowledge of the development. San Diego fired HC Marty Schottenheimer Monday and contacted the Falcons Tuesday to request permission to speak with Zimmer, who was hired in mid-January to head the defense under new HC Bobby Petrino. The San Diego Union-Tribune reports as reality set in and business moved forward after the shock of Marty Schottenheimer's Monday dismissal, the Chargers moved quickly to begin lining up interviews with people who might want to be the next head coach of what many consider to be the NFL's most talented team. The Chargers yesterday requested to speak with at least six candidates currently under contract with other franchises, including Jim Mora, Ron Rivera, Rex Ryan, Mike Singletary and Norv Turner. New coaches added to family

The Star-Telegram reports the Cowboys hired Baylor quarterbacks coach Wes Phillips, the son of new Cowboys HC Wade Phillips, on Tuesday. Wes, in a move expected since Wade's hiring, will be an offensive assistant in charge of quality control. The team also reached to its on-the-field family and hired former Cowboys and Texas A&M LB Dat Nguyen. Nguyen will take over as inside linebackers coach, the spot vacated by the departing Vincent Brown, and will be in charge of defensive quality control. Also expected to be hired is Titans receivers coach Ray Sherman, who told Tennessee HC Jeff Fisher he is leaving. Sherman might join the Cowboys as an assistant head coach. Read more

Texans receiving some inquiries about Carr

The Houston Chronicle reports when GM Rick Smith disclosed Tuesday that teams have inquired about the availability of QB David Carr, he was quick to point out that Carr is still the Texans' starting quarterback. While refusing to disclose which teams have called and what was discussed, Smith made it clear that Carr, like just about every Texans player, is available if the GM and HC Gary Kubiak believe it will improve the franchise. "I want to keep any discussions I have with other general managers confidential," Smith said. "But my goal is to improve our team in any way possible. "I want to repeat what we said after the season: that David's our starting quarterback. But we're trying to improve the team, and I've fielded some calls about some of our players, including a couple of inquiries asking whether David might be available. "If I believe improving our team involves a player on our team, a player on another team, a free agent or a draft choice, then I'll absolutely entertain (doing) it." Read more
