WR Curtis fires agent

The Star-Ledger reports the Giants' quiet start to free agency took a strange turn yesterday. Early in the day, WR Kevin Curtis was scheduled to visit the Giants as soon as last night after leaving the Lions' facility without a contract. He would have been only the second player to visit the team since the start of free agency. RB Dominic Rhodes stopped by during the weekend. Read more

Johnson agrees to be Romo's backup

The Star-Ledger reports QB Brad Johnson is joining the Cowboys as the backup to QB Tony Romo. Johnson, a 15-year veteran, came to terms on a three-year, $7.5 million deal with the Cowboys on Monday, a team source said. Johnson, 38, comes to Dallas after two seasons in Minnesota. He was cut last week. Johnson was the starter on Tampa Bay's Super Bowl title team in 2002. Johnson replaces recently released QB Drew Bledsoe as backup and mentor to Romo, who started the final nine games for the Cowboys last season. Read more

Jets deal for Bears RB Jones

The Star-Ledger reports the Jets awoke from their off-season slumber last night with a tentative deal to acquire Chicago Bears RB Thomas Jones, a trade that will cost them financially but one that fills a major hole on a team that suffered from a lackluster rushing game last season. Jones, a back-to-back 1,200-yard rusher for the NFC champions, would be the heir apparent to future Hall of Famer Curtis Martin, who has indicated he'll retire because of a knee injury. Martin missed all of last season, and the Jets struggled to find consistency among his replacements. Read more

Colts re-sign linebacker Morris

The Indianapolis Star reports RB Rob Morris, one of the integral parts of a revitalized defense that helped the Indianapolis Colts win Super Bowl XLI, will return. In an expected move, the team on Monday re-signed the veteran linebacker to a three-year contract. Financial terms were not disclosed, but team president Bill Polian said, "We were able to re-sign Rob at a price we could afford." The signing had been anticipated since last week, when the Colts allowed Morris to join 10 of his teammates in becoming unrestricted free agents. Read more
