New Orleans Saints 08/28/2007 5:31 PMThe Times-Picayune reports Saints QB Drew Brees won't play in Thursday night's exhibition finale against the Miami Dolphins at the Superdome, and HC Sean Payton said it's likely he'll keep other front-line players on the sideline as well. "I'm probably going to start Jamie (Martin) and give him a good half's worth of work, and go with Tyler (Palko) in the second half," Payton said after Monday's practice. "There's a good chance I'll sit a number of guys. "Our approach is going to be to see how deep we are at certain positions, and if we can rest a handful of guys that would be considered for a starting position for next week's game (at the Indianapolis Colts). Carolina Panthers 08/28/2007 5:29 PMThe Charlotte Observer reports the Panthers made a handful of roster moves Tuesday afternoon to get to the NFLâs 75-player limit. RB Marlion Jackson was waived and WR Justin McCullum was waived with an injury settlement. WR Josh Davis was placed on the non-football illness reserve list. QB Brett Basanez and DE Rondell Biggs were placed on the injured-reserve list. The Panthers have to have their roster down to 53 players by Saturday afternoon.Read more
Pittsburgh Steelers 08/28/2007 5:26 PMAP reports Pittsburgh Steelers WR Hines Ward had surgery Tuesday to repair a broken nose, but it isn't expected to prevent him from playing in the Sept. 9 opener at Cleveland.HC Mike Tomlin said Tuesday that he hasn't ruled Ward out of Thursday night's exhibition game at Carolina, when the starters are expected to play one quarter. "Hines is Hines. I wouldn't count Hines out," Tomlin said of the Steelers' career leader in receptions. "He's a player-coach in my mind.
