Patriots offer Thomas contract

The Palm Beach Post reports LB Zach Thomas today began making his rounds in search of a new employer, and he received his first offer just as quickly. The seven-time Pro Bowler, released Thursday after 12 years with the Dolphins, visited the New England Patriots on Monday. A source close to Thomas said the AFC champions tried to lock up the middle linebacker with a contract offer. But the source added no deal was expected to be signed until after this week's NFL combine in Indianapolis. That would give other teams a chance to enter the Thomas derby. Read more

The Baltimore Sun reports the Ravens kept DE/OLB Terrell Suggs off the free-agent market yesterday, but it came at a steep cost. By placing the franchise tag on the two-time Pro Bowl linebacker, the Ravens will give Suggs a one-year contract worth $8.065 million (the average of the five highest-paid linebackers in the NFL), which eats up most of the team's available salary-cap room. While the Ravens plan to make some moves in free agency, none is expected to be as significant as holding on to Suggs. Read more

Barber's agent expects talks with 'Boys

The Dallas Morning News reports Drew Rosenhaus, agent for RB Marion Barber, said he plans to meet with the Dallas Cowboys this week at the NFL scouting combine. The Cowboys have said they would like to sign the standout running back to a long-term deal. Dallas is expected to give Barber, a restricted free agent, a $2.562 million tender, which would require another team to fork over first- and third-round picks to get him. The Cowboys value Barber as the future at running back, especially after he earned his first Pro Bowl berth despite not starting a regular-season game. Read more

Redskins want Collins to return as No. 2

The Washington Post reports new Washington Redskins coach Jim Zorn phoned QB Todd Collins this week to relay the team's interest in retaining the potential free agent as a backup, and the team also agreed on a one-year contract with Pro Bowl long snapper Ethan Albright.  Zorn told Collins that Jason Campbell would start this fall, but praised Collins's production last season, league sources said, telling the veteran he considers him a strong No. 2.
