No surgery needed for Strahan's foot

The Star-Ledger reports DE Michael Strahan does not need surgery on his injured right foot. And he said he'll be back next year. Strahan, whose season ended on Tuesday when he was placed on injured reserve, traveled to North Carolina yesterday to visit Dr. Robert Anderson, the Panthers' assistant team physician. Strahan said Anderson told him the bones in the Lisfranc joint in his foot have not separated. He said there's only a torn ligament, which will heal on its own. Read more

The Baltimore Sun reports Ravens LB Ray Lewis concedes he has a fear for the next couple of months, and it has nothing to do with RB LaDainian Tomlinson or QB Peyton Manning. It's the prospect of losing defensive coordinator Rex Ryan after the season. When teams begin their search for a new head coach after this weekend's final regular-season games, Ryan could be the next in a line of Ravens defensive assistants to leave. Read more

Taylor: Lifetime bans would end steroid use

The Palm Beach Post reports if DE Jason Taylor were NFL commissioner, there would be no four-game suspensions for violating the league's substance-abuse policy. There would be lifetime bans. "You'd stop it, wouldn't you?" Taylor, the Dolphins' Pro Bowl defensive end, said Thursday. "I guarantee you'd stop it. I'm not the smartest man in the world, but I know if you did that, it would stop. "There's a way to end this whole steroid situation: If you get caught using steroids or performance-enhancing drugs, you can't play the game anymore. It's as simple as that." Taylor's comments came a day after he said San Diego LB Shawne Merriman making the Pro Bowl team sent "the wrong message" to young fans. Merriman, who was suspended four games this season for violating the substance-abuse policy, responded Thursday. Read more

McClure signs for another five years

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports Falcons C Todd McClure recently signed a five-year contract extension with the team, according to his agent, Robb Nelson. McClure, a seven-year veteran from LSU, is signed through 2011 with base salaries of $1 million in 2007, followed by $1.3 million, $1.4 million, $1.6 million and $1.7 million. The contract, with a signing bonus and guarantees, is believed to be worth about $10 million. Read more
