Zampese talking to Panthers

The Dayton Daily News reports Bengals quarterbacks coach Ken Zampese is in Charlotte, N.C., interviewing for the Carolina Panthers' offensive coordinator post, the Dayton Daily News has learned. The position opened on Monday when the Panthers fired Dan Henning. Carolina has already interviewed two in-house candidates — Jim Skipper, assistant head coach/running backs, and quarterbacks coach Mike McCoy. Read more

WR coach Lofton negotiating with Raiders

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports while the Chargers are taking their time regarding the future of their head coach, the team's most hated rival is considering filling its head coaching position with a San Diego assistant. Receivers coach James Lofton and the Oakland Raiders spent much of yesterday negotiating details of a contract, sources said. The sides parted last night without an agreement but are scheduled to resume talks in the coming days. Read more

VanGorder to take Falcons job

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports the Brian VanGorder-Georgia Southern marriage is over. And there never was much of a honeymoon period. VanGorder is leaving the Eagles after one unsuccessful, 3-8 season to become linebackers coach for the Falcons and their new coach, Bobby Petrino. It will be Van Gorder's fourth job in four years, and it leaves the school looking for its third coach in three seasons. For a proud program with six Division I-AA national championships in its trophy case, Tuesday's news was a tough, unexpected blow. "I was extremely disappointed," GSU athletics director Sam Baker said during a Tuesday night news conference. "I am glad to see him go," said Matthew Hammock, a GSU freshman from Savannah. "Hopefully, our new coach will come in and restore some of the traditions that VanGorder saw unfit for our program." Read more

Shula's candidacy brings varied reaction

The Palm Beach Post reports the Dolphins could be looking to their past to help guide their future. Depending on who you ask, that's either a sign of the team's due diligence or that their far-flung coaching search has gone off the deep end. Former University of Alabama coach Mike Shula, son of Hall of Fame coach and Dolphins legend Don Shula, has interviewed for the open head coaching position twice, the last time on Saturday, and has joined their list of finalists, the team said Tuesday.
