The Florida Times-Union reports WR Chad Owens, who captivated Jaguars fans with dashing punt returns during training camp and the preseason but wound up spending most of the past two seasons on the practice squad, signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Wednesday. Raiders may be on fast track

The Contra Costa Times reports Southern Cal assistant coach/quarterbacks coach Steve Sarkisian returned Wednesday for a second interview for the Raiders coaching vacancy, a person familiar with the search process confirmed. There are strong indications that Sarkisian won't be leaving town without an offer to be the Raiders' next coach. Sarkisian, 32, met with Raiders managing general partner Al Davis and other team officials throughout the day Wednesday and into the night. The parties are scheduled to pick up today where they left off Wednesday night, with the potential of the interview lasting until Friday some time. The Raiders didn't release any details regarding Sarkisian's interview, per team policy. Sarkisian could not be reached for comment. Read more

Whisenhunt releases 2 coaches

The Arizona Republic reports Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt made the first decisions about the shape of his coaching staff Wednesday, deciding not to retain two assistants still under contract. Offensive coordinator Mike Kruczek, promoted from quarterbacks coach during the season, and defensive line coach Larry Brooks were released. Whisenhunt is considering five other Cardinals assistants, including defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast. Kruczek, an assistant under Dennis Green for three seasons, became offensive coordinator after Keith Rowen was fired after six games. Read more

Chargers keeping head coach for '07

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports the Chargers announced yesterday that HC Marty Schottenheimer will return for the 2007 season. While concerned by Schottenheimer's epic playoff failings, team President Dean Spanos and GM A.J. Smith decided continuity was most important for a team that finished with the NFL's best record in 2006. Read more
