Cameron may be lead candidate

The Palm Beach Post reports the Dolphins now have a firm time frame to hire a new coach - and perhaps a new preferred candidate. San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator Cam Cameron concluded his interview Thursday afternoon and stayed in South Florida for a second night, the first out-of-town candidate to do so. A source familiar with the discussions between Cameron and the team was rather upbeat about how they progressed. But the club emphasized that no offer has been extended to any candidate. "I can tell you with 100 percent certainty, nothing has been decided tonight," Dolphins senior vice president Harvey Greene said Thursday. "We hope to have this finalized by Friday or Saturday at the latest." Read more

Smith signs $25 million deal with Jags

AP reports the Jacksonville Jaguars locked up another key defensive starter Thursday, signing LB Daryl Smith to a five-year contract extension worth about $25 million. Smith, a second-round draft pick from Georgia Tech in 2004, has started every game the past two seasons and led the team with 170 tackles last year while filling in for injured middle LB Mike Peterson. The new contract, which begins in 2008, includes $10 million in bonuses. Read more

T.O. to undergo second surgery

The Star-Telegram reports Cowboys WR Terrell Owens will undergo a second surgery in the next six to eight weeks to repair a torn tendon in his right ring finger, according to a source. This surgery, the second phase of a two-part process that began when Owens had surgery Jan. 11 in Miami, will reattach Owens' torn tendon to his finger tip. Owens said last week that he would be ready for training camp, though his availability for a possible minicamp at the end of May could be in doubt. Read more

Texans tab Sherman to head offense

The Houston Chronicle reports Mike Sherman, who twice interviewed for the head coaching job with the Arizona Cardinals, was promoted to assistant head coach/offensive coordinator by Texans HC Gary Kubiak on Wednesday. Sherman, who was on the short list of candidates for the Cardinals' job that went to former Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt on Sunday, will be an offensive coordinator for the second time in the NFL.
