Knee injury to sideline Quinn

ESPN.com reports Notre Dame QB Brady Quinn will sit out the Senior Bowl with a minor knee injury. Quinn will still travel to Mobile for the game, an audition for senior NFL prospects, Senior Bowl spokesman Vic Knight told the Press-Register of Mobile. Knight said Friday he didn't know which knee was injured or how the injury occurred. Read more

Cubs sign Samardzija to five-year, $10 million deal

ESPN.com reports WR Jeff Samardzija decided to give up football and stay with baseball. The former Notre Dame receiver, projected as a first-round pick in the upcoming NFL draft, agreed Friday to a $10 million, five-year contract to pitch for the Chicago Cubs. Read more

Bengals protect selves on coaching front

The Dayton Daily News reports the Bengals don't want to hold back any of their assistant coaches from pursuing promotions elsewhere — unless, of course, the prospective new club is a division rival. That's why Cincinnati refused the Cleveland Browns permission to interview quarterbacks coach Ken Zampese for the Browns' offensive coordinator post. Zampese was allowed to interview with the Carolina Panthers for their coordinator's job, but there's no way Bengals president Mike Brown and HC Marvin Lewis will let Zampese out of his contract — which runs through the 2007 season — to go to Cleveland. The no-division-foe edict makes sense. Read more
