The Contra Costa Times reports with free agency and the draft looming, the 49ers on Monday signaled their intent to change their secondary depth by releasing CB Sammy Davis. In a trade of first-round disappointments, Davis was acquired nearly a year ago from the San Diego Chargers in exchange for WR Rashaun Woods. The Chargers released Woods in training camp. Read more

McGahee could be on block

The Buffalo News reports the Buffalo Bills are doing more than just assessing college football talent at the NFL Scouting Combine. New York Giants GM Jerry Reese indicated Saturday that the Bills have let it be known that RB Willis McGahee is available via a trade. Other NFL sources also confirmed that the Bills are actively seeking a trade partner for McGahee, Buffalo's 2003 first-round draft pick. It is not known if any teams have approached the Bills about McGahee, but at least one appears to have some interest. Read more

Dolphins' Harrington, Carter face release

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports the Dolphins are set for some housecleaning before the start of Friday's free-agent signing period, with sources saying Monday that the release of QB Joey Harrington and guards Seth McKinney and Bennie Anderson is imminent by week's end. DE Kevin Carter also will be released Thursday if he cannot reach agreement on a restructured contract, a source said, while the agent for OT Damion McIntosh said that he expects the team's starting left tackle to test the free-agent market.
