Brown signs with Patriots

AP reports WR Troy Brown signed with the New England Patriots for a 15th season Tuesday, giving the wide receiver a chance to increase his team record of 557 catches. Brown, 36, has spent his entire career with the Patriots since being drafted in the eighth round out of Marshall in 1993. He did not attend last month's minicamp where another former Marshall receiver, Randy Moss, worked out with his new team after he was acquired from Oakland in a draft day trade in April. Read more

Briggs still unsigned at 'franchise' deadline

The Chicago Sun-Times reports the NFL's deadline to sign players designated with the franchise tag to a long-term contract expired Monday afternoon, but the Bears' window to lock up LB Lance Briggs well into the future closed long ago. Detroit Lions DT Cory Redding got a deal done just in time, a seven-year contract that reportedly will pay him $49 million and makes him the highest-paid at his position in the league. That left Briggs and New England Patriots CB Asante Samuel as the only players who will go into the 2007 season playing under the franchise tag. The Bears turned their attention elsewhere when negotiations on a deal with agent Drew Rosenhaus were called off before the 2006 draft. Briggs was told then that the club would seriously consider placing the tag on him. No serious talks were held since, and three things could happen as training camp approaches in nine days for the weak-side linebacker. Read more

Police: Chambers failed multiple sobriety tests

The Palm Beach Post reports Dolphins WR Chris Chambers was clocked driving 74 mph in a 45-mph zone and failed to adequately perform a series of field-sobriety tests after police pulled him over early Saturday in North Carolina, according to a police report. Chambers, the team's No. 1 receiver, was arrested at 2:31 a.m. Saturday. He was charged by Charlotte-Mecklenburg police with driving while impaired, reckless driving and speeding. He is scheduled to appear in court Aug. 15. Read more
