Texans sign veteran DB Poole

The Houston Chronicle reports after trying out three free agent defensive backs after Tuesday's morning practice, the Texans have decided to sign DB Tyrone Poole. Poole, 35, is older than Shaun Williams and Raymond Walls, but he had the best workout, according to GM Rick Smith. S Derrick Gibson was scheduled to work out with the others, but he was a no-show. Vick attorneys negotiating plea

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports QB Michael Vick's attorneys are engaged in plea negotiations with federal prosecutors and the Falcons quarterback could reach an agreement before new dogfighting charges are handed down next week, according to a person with knowledge of the negotiations. The negotiations follow news that two more of Vick's three co-defendants are scheduled to enter guilty pleas later this week as part of a deal with prosecutors.

Warren trade seems imminent

The Denver Post reports the Broncos spent Monday continuing to work the phones in an attempt to trade veteran DT Gerard Warren. Warren declined to comment, but acknowledged he expects to be traded as soon as today. Teams most interested in Warren appear to be Washington, New Orleans and Tennessee. Indianapolis and the New York Giants declined initial overtures from the Broncos. Read more

AP reports the Denver Broncos expect to part ways soon with DT Gerard Warren, either by trading or releasing the seven-year veteran. Warren didn't make the trip to San Francisco on Monday night for the Broncos' 17-13 preseason victory over the 49ers. After the game, HC Mike Shanahan indicated Warren probably is on his way out of Denver. "I'm not going to get into detail, but we thought we had a trade, and I'll talk about it a little more on Wednesday," Shanahan said. "Until things are finalized, I kept him home because I thought we had a trade." Warren, the third overall pick in the 2001 draft by Cleveland, spent the last two seasons in Denver, making 49 tackles and 5 1/2 sacks. He revitalized his career with the Broncos after struggling through four seasons with the Browns. But Warren apparently doesn't fit new defensive coach Jim Bates' scheme, which requires tackles who can hold their positions instead of penetrating the backfield. Warren seemed open to the transition earlier in camp, speaking optimistically about the new defense. Read more
