Steelers cut RB Barlow, nine others

The Post-Gazette reports former Pitt RB Kevan Barlow, who was trying to become a third-down back with the Steelers, was among 10 players cut today by HC Mike Tomlin. Also cut were P Mike Barr, K Connor Hughes, wide receivers Eric Fowler and Dan Sheldon, DE Derrick Jones, RB Larry Croom, long-snapper Jared Retkofsky, C Donovan Raiola and LB Richard Koonce. Porter optimistic he'll play in opener

The Palm Beach Post reports high-priced LB Joey Porter's rehabilitation from minor knee surgery is ahead of schedule, making him more optimistic that he'll be ready for the Dolphins' Sept. 9 season opener at Washington. Porter, who had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Aug. 7, returned to practice and participated in some 7-on-7 drills and ran to test his knee in a practice setting. The nine-year veteran said he ran last week and experienced some minor, but expected, swelling. Read more

Bentley placed on PUP list

ESPN’s Len Pasquarelli reports two-time Pro Bowl OL LeCharles Bentley, who hasn't participated in a full-scale practice for the Cleveland Browns since tearing the patella tendon of his left knee in the first training camp practice of 2006, will have his potential return to the field delayed until at least October. In a move that was hardly unanticipated, the Browns on Tuesday placed Bentley on the NFL's inactive physically unable to perform (PUP) list. Read more

Bengals name captains; Pollack moved to PUP

The Dayton Daily News reports on a day when the Bengals named QB Carson Palmer and defensive tackle John Thornton as team captains, the club announced a series of moves that reduced the roster to 74 in accordance with today's NFL-mandated cut to 75 or fewer players. There was only one mild surprise regarding outside LB David Pollack, the club's first-round draft pick in 2005. Instead of placing Pollack on the season-ending Injured Reserve list, the Bengals placed Pollack on the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. Pollack continues rehab from a neck fracture suffered on Sept. 17, 2006, against Cleveland. Officially, Pollack is sidelined for the first six weeks of the regular season. After an additional three-week window, the club must make one of three moves — place him on IR, ending his season; activate him to the 53-man roster; or release him. Look for Pollack to go on IR sometime in October or November. Read more
