Center battle still undecided

The Houston Chronicle reports for the past six seasons, Mike Flanagan has started at center. That streak is in jeopardy. The 12-year veteran remains locked in a close battle with C Steve McKinney for the starting job with the Texans. Flanagan, who joined the team from the Green Bay Packers last season, started the first nine games in 2006 before injuries sidelined him. If McKinney wins the job, Flanagan will enter a season as a reserve for the first time since 2000. Read more

Jackson gets starting nod

The Pioneer Press reports for QB Tarvaris Jackson, Monday was just another day, even if Vikings HC Brad Childress named him the starting quarterback after practice. "I'm still going to work hard ... because we got a goal each year, and that's to win the Super Bowl and win football games. So I don't think it's a change," Jackson said. "It's a big deal, but it's not a real change in the way I'm going at things each day." Read more

Campbell Says He's Willing, but Is His Knee Able?

The Washington Post reports QB Jason Campbell said he intends to play in the Washington Redskins' final preseason game Thursday night in Jacksonville, although with a short week of preparation HC Joe Gibbs said he will not put Campbell on the field unless his sore left knee is 100 percent. The Redskins, who played a lightning-shortened game Saturday night, face uncertainty throughout the lineup because of injuries and are trying to integrate new players with a limited window in practice. Veteran Rex Tucker cut as Lions trim roster

The Detroit Free Press reports eight-year veteran OL Rex Tucker was the biggest name cut by the Lions on Tuesday morning. The Lions also cut FB Keith Belton, LB Cole Haley, LB James Hargrave, DE Marcus Lewis and WR Edell Shepherd. Read more
