Broncos agree to terms with free agent Rice

09/03/2007 7:35 PM ESPN’s Len Pasquarelli reports free-agent DE Simeon Rice, one of the few potential impact players remaining in free agency and a guy who enters 2007 as the second-leading active sacker in the league, reached a contract agreement with the Denver Broncos on Monday evening. Rice, 33, arrived in Denver on Sunday, dined that evening with team officials, and then chose the Broncos' contract offer over the proposal the St. Louis Rams submitted. Read more

Frye to start vs. Steelers

09/03/2007 7:30 PM AP reports the suspense is over. Charlie Frye will start at quarterback for Cleveland's season opener Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Frye, who started 13 games last year, battled in training camp to keep his job after coach Romeo Crennel turned the starting position into an open competition. After offseason workouts and minicamps, Frye entered training camp slightly behind QB Derek Anderson. Read more

Kiffin axes vets, subs, rookies

09/03/2007 9:49 AM The San Francisco Chronicle reports Raiders HC Lane Kiffin pulled away the scholarships Saturday, with some rookies and offseason add-ons getting tossed out for measure. Gone are longtimers like wide receivers Alvis Whitted and Carlos Francis, along with FB Zack Crockett. Out are second-teamers such as right OG Kevin Boothe, DT Anttaj Hawthorne and SS Donovin Darius. Missing from the final 53-man roster are rookies like DE Quentin Moses, a third-round draft pick, and fifth-round S Eric Frampton. Read more
