Andrews, Smith possible for opener

The Trenton Times reports judging by the moods of TE L.J. Smith and OG Shawn Andrews, who each hobbled through training camp, it appears as if the Eagles have navigated through the preseason with a minimum of damage. Both practiced yesterday and afterward hinted that they expect to play in Sunday's season opener at Green Bay after not appearing at all in any of the preseason contests. Read more

Ravens looking at Leftwich

The Baltimore Sun reports Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome said yesterday that the team has had "a couple of small conversations" with QB Byron Leftwich's agent. The Ravens are believed to be one of seven teams that have had preliminary talks with Leftwich, a four-year starting quarterback for the Jacksonville Jaguars who was cut Saturday after the team decided to go with QB David Garrard. The Baltimore Sun reports the Ravens' biggest player -- literally and figuratively -- is also their biggest injury concern. Ten-time Pro Bowl pick OT Jonathan Ogden, listed at 6 feet 9 and 345 pounds, is still a question mark for the Ravens' season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday night. Ogden, who has been sidelined the entire preseason by a hyperextended toe on his left foot, took part in individual drills yesterday. Read more

The San Francisco Chronicle reports RB Frank Gore, held out of all four preseason games while his broken right hand healed, will bring fresh legs to the 49ers' regular-season opener Monday night against Arizona. For players, especially those who carry or catch the ball, "fresh legs" ranks just behind "day off" on the scale of importance. Gore looked particularly quick on the few handoffs he took in Monday's practice without pads. It's a reflection of him working hard on his conditioning while he was out and of not taking a beating for the last month in camp. Read more
