LB Johnson expects to have breakout year

The Kansas City Star reports LB Derrick Johnson says he’s got “the most talent of any linebacker in the league.” The problem, he admits, is that he hasn’t shown it. At least not yet. “Chiefs fans haven’t seen what I can do,” Johnson said. “But they will. I can promise you that.” Two years after Kansas City selected him with the 15th overall pick in the 2005 draft, Johnson has fallen a bit short of the expectations that were placed on him when he entered the pro ranks. The Dayton Daily News reports QB Troy Smith has accomplished two of his three goals. It could take a while to reach the coveted third plateau. The 2006 Heisman Trophy winner from Ohio State got drafted — he was the final pick in the fifth round (No. 174 overall) — and made Baltimore's 53-man roster. Read more

The Florida Times-Union reports RB Fred Taylor used to be known as fragile. Now he should be called durable. There are only 30 players in the league entering their 10th season in the league who've been with the same team their entire career. Taylor is the only running back in the group. "It's a good feeling," Taylor said. "The media tore me up earlier in my career with the Fragile Fred thing. I sit back and smile about it now. It's not how you start, but how you finish. I never was fragile." Taylor, who enters the season with 9,513 yards, wants to break the 10,000-yard mark in the fifth game against Houston and his goal for the season is 1,500 yards. Read more

Davis replaces Kreider as starter

The Post-Gazette reports FB Carey Davis, a first-year free agent, did more than win a roster spot in the Steelers backfield. He has supplanted FB Dan Kreider, a five-year starter, as the No. 1 fullback. Offensive coordinator Bruce Arians said yesterday that Davis, who has never played in an NFL game, will be the starter when the Steelers open their regular season Sunday in Cleveland. What's more, it's possible Kreider might be deactivated against the Browns, a decision that will be made by HC Mike Tomlin. Read more
