Garrett available to be hired after Cowboys' loss

The Baltimore Sun reports the Ravens are now free to pursue Dallas offensive coordinator Jason Garrett for their head coaching job if they want to do so, thanks to Tony Romo and the Cowboys. With the Cowboys 21-17 upset loss to the New York Giants in the NFC divisional round, there are no longer any NFL rules stopping the Ravens from hiring Garrett, who is widely considered the front-runner for the Ravens job. If the Ravens don't immediately pursue Garrett, it could mean they covet someone else. Read more

Falcons pass on Heckert as GM

The Trenton Times reports once considered the front-runner to become the next general manager of the beleaguered Atlanta Falcons, Tom Heckert will have to look elsewhere if he wants to leave the Eagles. Heckert, 40, interviewed for the position last Monday and learned Saturday night that New England Patriots director of college scouting Tom Dimitroff had been given the charge of cleaning up the mess in Atlanta created by disgraced QB Michael Vick and former HC Bobby Petrino. Slaton decides to go pro

ESPN’s Joe Schad reports West Virginia junior RB Steve Slaton said Sunday he will enter the NFL draft. "I just told my coaches," an emotional Slaton said. "This is hard for me. But my coaches that knew me best have left. And now it's time for me to leave." In the school-issued statement, new Mountaineers coach Bill Stewart said his conversation with Slaton was "very private and heart-warming," and will remain private. "I believe every student athlete, male or female, should pursue, exhaust and complete their eligibility and academic requirements for graduation at their institution. With that being said, if someone can be financially secure with a large signing bonus, I understand that decision," Stewart said. Read more

Dimitroff signed as Falcons GM

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports the Falcons officially have a new general manager after former New England director of college scouting Tom Dimitroff signed his contract following the Patriots' AFC divisional playoff victory over Jacksonville on Saturday. He is scheduled to report to work as soon as Monday morning, the team confirmed. "I'm extremely excited to have the opportunity to become a part of the Atlanta Falcons organization," Dimitroff said in a statement released by the team Sunday. Read more
