Niners sign 5 players to future contracts

The San Francisco Chronicle reports RB Thomas Clayton was among five players signed to future contracts by the San Francisco 49ers on Monday. Clayton, CB Markus Curry, and receivers Jerard Rabb and Dominique Zeigler were on the 49ers' practice squad last month. San Francisco also signed TE Cooper Wallace, who spent last season on practice squads in Tennessee and Cincinnati. Read more

Exit Garrett, enter Harbaugh?

The Baltimore Sun reports when Jason Garrett didn't accept the Ravens' head coaching offer and left team headquarters yesterday, the Dallas offensive coordinator likely opened the door for Philadelphia Eagles secondary coach John Harbaugh, a league source said. While the Ravens are still making a run at Garrett and are continuing to negotiate with him, the team understands that landing its top candidate might have become more difficult because he is being pursued by the Dallas Cowboys and the Atlanta Falcons. According to the source, the Ravens are ready to hire Harbaugh as head coach over the next couple of days if Garrett is unavailable. Read more

Big Ben on ... Alan Faneca

The Post-Gazette reports QB Ben Roethlisberger has three desires as he enters the offseason: A tall wide receiver, the return of OG Alan Faneca, and a new contract as soon as possible. The contract most likely will be worked out, even if it does not occur as quickly as the Steelers quarterback might prefer. The other two are more problematic. Faneca becomes an unrestricted free agent Feb. 29, and while the Steelers plan to talk to his agent before then, even director of football operations Kevin Colbert noted Monday that "the price most likely has gone up." Still, Roethlisberger made his pitch to management that they try to keep his All-Pro guard, who has been a linchpin of the offensive line for a decade. Read more
