The Dayton Daily News reports for the Bengals' 27th-ranked defense, the long road back to respectability begins with discipline. "You have to coach tough to be tough," new defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer said on Wednesday. "You have to have that mentality that this is the line in the sand, and we're not letting the guys cross it. "I'm big on technique. I want to make sure guys do the things we're asking them to do — have their hands in the right place and their feet in the right place — do it right and play hard all the time." Read more

Lewis says Bengals won't trade Johnson

ESPN.com reports the Cincinnati Bengals introduced Mike Zimmer as their newest defensive coordinator Wednesday, but just as noteworthy was coach Marvin Lewis reiterating that the team had no intention of trading mercurial WR Chad Johnson. Johnson expressed unhappiness with the Bengals' front office during his appearance last Friday on ESPN's "Mike & Mike in the Morning," saying "not too many people really having my back within." He intimated that if he were considered a distraction and the reason for the Bengals' disappointing season, the organization should trade him. "The only thing for me to do or say now is, if you guys, as a team and organization, want to further yourself in the playoffs, I think you need to get rid of what the problem was during the season," Johnson said on radio. Rams talk to Zampese

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports before he left for Los Angeles and the Rams' annual summit meeting, coach Scott Linehan met with Ken Zampese in St. Louis about the team’s offensive coordinator position. According to league sources, Linehan also was scheduled to meet in St. Louis about the coordinator’s job with Chan Gailey, who was fired as Georgia Tech’s head coach after the ’07 season. But Gailey canceled. Whether Gailey remains in consideration in St. Louis is uncertain. Zampese, 40, has been quarterbacks coach in Cincinnati the past five seasons, in which time QB Carson Palmer was named to two Pro Bowls and the Bengals’ developed into one of the league’s best passing teams. Gailey has second interview for OC job

The Kansas City Star reports Chan Gailey was back in Kansas City on Tuesday for a second interview for the Chiefs’ vacant offensive coordinator’s position. He is the only one of the candidates to have a second face-to-face interview with coach Herm Edwards, though Edwards may visit again with others he’s already spoken with before making a decision.
