Lewis, Browns agree to deal

AP reports RB Jamal Lewis has agreed to terms on a three-year contract to stay with the Cleveland Browns. Lewis was to become an unrestricted free agent next week. But the Browns, who went 10-6 and barely missed the playoffs last season, didn't want to risk losing the bruising back after he rushed for more than 1,300 yards. Read more

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports the NFL scouting combine is Thomas Dimitroff's playground. The combine, which begins in earnest Thursday, is where the Falcons' new general manager can add to his knowledge of college prospects. It's his expertise as a longtime collegiate scout. bargaining and working backdoor deals with teams in preparation for the start of free agency Feb. 29. That part of Dimitroff's new job is well out of his wheelhouse. This is where Mike Smith comes in. The Falcons' new coach knows the NFL. From his days as Baltimore's defensive line coach and Jacksonville's defensive coordinator, he knows what players want. He also knows the angles agents and team officials play to make things happen. The Dayton Daily News reports the Cincinnati Bengals will be hunting for defense at the NFL Scouting Combine this week. You name it — tackle, end and linebacker — the Bengals need more impact players to boost their 27th-ranked unit. After tagging OT Stacy Andrews as their franchise player, the Bengals need to address their defensive front seven because veteran DE Justin Smith will likely bolt in free agency. Read more

The Dayton Daily News reports the Cleveland Browns' top areas of need are defensive tackle, outside linebacker, safety and wide receiver. NT Shaun Smith is solid, but isn't viewed as a long-term answer. Right outside LB Kamerion Wimbley could use a complement on the left side. Safety depth is needed behind Sean Jones and Brodney Pool. And Pro Bowl wideout Braylon Edwards needs a mate because Joe Jurevicius is a dinosaur. Read more
