Anderson gets multiyear deal from Browns

AP reports Cleveland Browns QB Derek Anderson wasn't a free agent for long. Anderson has agreed to a multiyear contract to stay with the Browns, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the contract had not been completed. GM Phil Savage believed if Anderson had gotten an offer from another team, the Browns probably wouldn't have been able to keep him. The Browns had been prepared to turn their offense over to QB Brady Quinn. The team had been negotiating a three-year, $20 million deal for Anderson. The 24-year-old agreed to a deal just hours after he became a restricted free agent. Read more

49ers sign RB Foster to two-year deal

AP reports the San Francisco 49ers reached deals with two unrestricted free agents and a running back who was cut by the Panthers. The 49ers reached agreements Friday morning with Lions QB J.T. O'Sullivan and Vikings LB Dontarrious Thomas. They also signed former Panthers RB DeShaun Foster to a two-year deal worth around $1.8 million. Read more

AP reports the Cleveland Browns are poised to launch Plan B at quarterback. B, for Brady, that is. The club was unable to sign starter Derek Anderson to a three-year, $20 million contract - $10 million guaranteed - before Friday's 12:01 a.m. free agency deadline and are prepared to turn their high-powered offense over to QB Brady Quinn, a first-round pick from last year and fan favorite. On Thursday, Browns GM Phil Savage protected the club by tendering Anderson a one-year contract offer for $2.5 million in 2008. Anderson did not accept the deal, making him a restricted free agent and on the market. Read more

Neal among three released by Chargers

CBSSports.com wire reports All-Pro FB Lorenzo Neal was released Thursday by the San Diego Chargers, who also parted with S Marlon McCree and right OT Shane Olivea in the hours before free agency opened. GM A.J. Smith said all three requested their release so they can quickly jump into free agency. Olivea had four years left on his contract while McCree and Neal each had three years remaining.
