Smith out for at least two more weeks

The Mercury News reports QB Alex Smith's separated shoulder and strained forearm will sideline him for at least two more weeks and season-ending surgery has still not been ruled out, team officials confirmed Tuesday night. The assessment was based on an examination of Smith earlier Tuesday by noted orthopedic specialist Dr. James Andrews, who initially confirmed team doctors' findings that Smith suffered a third-degree separation of his right throwing shoulder Sept. 30 against Seattle. Smith traveled to Birmingham, Ala., on Monday to have the shoulder re-examined, along with the forearm and returned to the Bay Area on Tuesday. An ESPN.com report, citing sources close to Smith, said the injury to the shoulder appeared worse than the findings during Andrews' original evaluation of the MRI scan. Read more
