He was traveling to Birmingham, Ala., to get a second opinion on his shoulder from esteemed sports orthopedist James Andrews. He was going outside the 49ers organization for help. This is one more sign of the growing divide between the team and its one-time franchise quarterback. When asked Monday about the comments made by Smith's agent, Tom Condon, that Smith's forearm problems are a result of overzealous training, Coach Mike Nolan smirked.
