For 49ers, separation and anxiety

The Mercury News reports losing QB Alex Smith to a separated shoulder was the just first sign of trouble for the 49ers. A slew of problems followed, including three turnovers, untimely penalties and a disturbing inability to take advantage of key opportunities, in a 23-3 loss to Seattle on Sunday, the 49ers' latest setback in a measuring-stick-type game. Smith was injured when he was sacked on the game's third play by 308-pound DL Rocky Bernard, who landed on top of Smith and drove the quarterback's throwing shoulder into the turf. HC Mike Nolan said Smith will be evaluated further today; he characterized Smith as doubtful for next Sunday's game against Baltimore. Read more
