Dolphins' Ginn growing into role as receiver

The Palm Beach Post reports WR Ted Ginn Jr. gained 39 yards on his first two catches Saturday night in the Dolphins' 19-14 exhibition win over Jacksonville - 1 yard more than he gained in last year's four exhibition games combined. And it was more receiving yards than he had in 13 of 16 regular-season games in 2007, his rookie season. After catching one pass for 10 yards in the exhibition opener against Tampa Bay, Ginn got "more at-bats" Saturday, as coach Tony Sparano vowed he would last week during training camp. Ginn caught four passes for 58 yards in one half of play Saturday, and Sparano was pleased with the way Ginn played "faster." "He knows he still has a long way to go," Sparano said. But "it's good for Ted. He went out there and competed at a high level."

Bengals DT Peko believes defense is ready

The Dayton Daily News reports the Cincinnati Bengals set out over the course of the off-season to improve a team defense that finished the 2007 season ranked 27th overall. However, only time will tell if the team is able to accomplish what they set out to achieve. One of the key areas on defense that the team wanted to address heavily was the defensive tackle position, which they did. The Bengals drafted rookie defensive tackles Pat Sims and Matt Shirley as reinforcement to help secure a D-line that surrendered 118 yards per game on the ground. The club took their aggressive approach a step further when they extended the contract of third-year defensive tackle Domata Peko, who is the anchor of the revamped D-line.

The Arizona Republic reports Cardinals receiver Anquan Boldin participated in a full practice Sunday for the first time in two weeks and gave the experience a positive review. "I'm cool," he said. "The only thing is getting into football shape." Boldin has been out since suffering a strained hamstring on the second day of practice at training camp. The injury was not believed to be serious, but Boldin and the team exercised caution in returning because they didn't want the injury to linger.

Spikes signed to help inside

The San Francisco Chronicle reports the 49ers added another expensive piece to their defensive alignment Sunday night when they landed veteran Takeo Spikes, who will join Patrick Willis in a high-powered inside linebacking tandem. To make room for the two-time Pro Bowl selection, the team released linebacker Brandon Moore, who led them in tackles two years ago but whose play had fallen off since then. Spikes, 31, and the 49ers had been talking since March after he was released by Philadelphia after just one season. He was due to make $5 million in 2008, and the Eagles felt they could use that money elsewhere since they liked their younger linebackers.

Ravens defense putting the smack down in camp

The Baltimore Sun reports the defense overwhelmed the quarterbacks and offensive line yesterday morning seemingly at the whim of defensive coordinator Rex Ryan. Troy Smith was sacked four times, rookie Joe Flacco twice and Kyle Boller once - and those are conservative numbers. When the quarterbacks did have time to throw, they either overthrew their receivers or had the passes knocked down by the secondary. The best throw came from Boller, who rolled out right and lofted a pass that rookie wide receiver Marcus Smith hauled in.

Lions get 'best possible result' after Ernie Sims' MRI

The Detroit Free Press reports an MRI exam revealed LB Ernie Sims' right knee suffered only a bone bruise Sunday morning when he leapt for a pass and landed awkwardly. "I think it's the best possible result we could get back from a guy who sustained an injury to his knee, and as soon as the soreness goes away he can come back and play," said Dean Kleinschmidt, the Lions' director of athletic medicine.

Thompson no closer to Favre deal

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports frustration began to set in Monday at the headquarters of the Green Bay Packers with the realization that in all probability there will be no rapid resolution to their standoff with QB Brett Favre. The Packers have been calling all over the National Football League trying to acquire something of value for the Hall of Fame quarterback, whom they no longer want. But a source close to the trade process said the team had nothing even close to an offer it would consider. An executive in personnel for one of the teams contacted by the Packers' personnel department summed up the depressing message that Ted Thompson has been hearing.

Misery remains Polamalu's company

The Post-Gazette reports S Troy Polamalu lines up and plays all over the field for the Steelers, yet he found it difficult to open his sixth training camp at a new position yesterday -- on the sideline. That came courtesy of an injury to his left hamstring that developed a week ago today while he was running to stay in shape. "It's always miserable being injured," Polamalu said. He became all-too familiar with that misery a year ago when he missed five full games and played in many others with injuries that varied from broken/bruised ribs, a partially torn PCL in a knee and an abdominal injury.

The Baltimore Sun reports the Ravens' already thin offensive line took a major blow this morning at training camp when left tackle Adam Terry was carted off the field with an apparent left leg injury. Terry, who had moved from right tackle to left when Jared Gaither injured his ankle over the weekend, was screaming in pain and grabbing his left leg before being taken off the field. In the offseason Terry had surgery on his left ankle.

Colts defensive lineman Quinn Pitcock missing from camp

The Indianapolis Star reports DT Quinn Pitcock, expected to play a significant role in the defensive tackle rotation, had not reported to camp as of late Monday. The 2007 third-round draft pick out of Ohio State is on the "reserve/did not report'' list. "He's going through some personal things,'' coach Tony Dungy said. "He's going to let us know when he can be back.'' Pitcock, 24, could not be reached for comment. Neither Dungy nor Pitcock's agent, Brad Leshnock, chose to address speculation on an NFL-related Web site that Pitcock has lost the desire to play. Dungy said Pitcock participated in the offseason conditioning program without issue.
