Dolphins' Ginn growing into role as receiver
Miami Dolphins
August 18, 2008 8:21 am
The Palm Beach Post reports WR Ted Ginn Jr. gained 39 yards on his first two catches Saturday night in the Dolphins' 19-14 exhibition win over Jacksonville - 1 yard more than he gained in last year's four exhibition games combined. And it was more receiving yards than he had in 13 of 16 regular-season games in 2007, his rookie season. After catching one pass for 10 yards in the exhibition opener against Tampa Bay, Ginn got "more at-bats" Saturday, as coach Tony Sparano vowed he would last week during training camp. Ginn caught four passes for 58 yards in one half of play Saturday, and Sparano was pleased with the way Ginn played "faster." "He knows he still has a long way to go," Sparano said. But "it's good for Ted. He went out there and competed at a high level."

Bengals DT Peko believes defense is ready
Cincinnati Bengals
August 18, 2008 8:17 am
The Dayton Daily News reports the Cincinnati Bengals set out over the course of the off-season to improve a team defense that finished the 2007 season ranked 27th overall. However, only time will tell if the team is able to accomplish what they set out to achieve. One of the key areas on defense that the team wanted to address heavily was the defensive tackle position, which they did. The Bengals drafted rookie defensive tackles Pat Sims and Matt Shirley as reinforcement to help secure a D-line that surrendered 118 yards per game on the ground. The club took their aggressive approach a step further when they extended the contract of third-year defensive tackle Domata Peko, who is the anchor of the revamped D-line.

Boldin returns to practice
Arizona Cardinals
August 11, 2008 10:27 am
The Arizona Republic reports Cardinals receiver Anquan Boldin participated in a full practice Sunday for the first time in two weeks and gave the experience a positive review. "I'm cool," he said. "The only thing is getting into football shape." Boldin has been out since suffering a strained hamstring on the second day of practice at training camp. The injury was not believed to be serious, but Boldin and the team exercised caution in returning because they didn't want the injury to linger.

Spikes signed to help inside
San Francisco 49ers
August 11, 2008 10:23 am
The San Francisco Chronicle reports the 49ers added another expensive piece to their defensive alignment Sunday night when they landed veteran Takeo Spikes, who will join Patrick Willis in a high-powered inside linebacking tandem. To make room for the two-time Pro Bowl selection, the team released linebacker Brandon Moore, who led them in tackles two years ago but whose play had fallen off since then. Spikes, 31, and the 49ers had been talking since March after he was released by Philadelphia after just one season. He was due to make $5 million in 2008, and the Eagles felt they could use that money elsewhere since they liked their younger linebackers.

Ravens defense putting the smack down in camp
Baltimore Ravens
August 11, 2008 10:19 am
The Baltimore Sun reports the defense overwhelmed the quarterbacks and offensive line yesterday morning seemingly at the whim of defensive coordinator Rex Ryan. Troy Smith was sacked four times, rookie Joe Flacco twice and Kyle Boller once - and those are conservative numbers. When the quarterbacks did have time to throw, they either overthrew their receivers or had the passes knocked down by the secondary. The best throw came from Boller, who rolled out right and lofted a pass that rookie wide receiver Marcus Smith hauled in.
