Russell released on $2,500 bond

AP reports former Oakland Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell has been charged with possession of a controlled substance -- codeine syrup -- after being arrested at his home in Alabama on Monday, authorities said. The 24-year-old former LSU star and the No. 1 draft choice in 2007 was arrested as part of an undercover narcotics investigation, said Mobile County Sheriff's spokeswoman Lori Myles. She would not say what led to his arrest. She said he did not have a prescription for the codeine.

Bengals open to negotiating new contract for Benson

The Dayton Daily News reports running back Cedric Benson found himself a home with the Cincinnati Bengals two seasons ago after a disappointing start to his career in Chicago. His stay could be made permanent with a new contract, which appears to be on the horizon. Representatives for Benson have approached Bengals management regarding a contract extension. Benson is in the final year of a two-year deal, making him a free agent at the end of the 2010 season.

Seymour signs $12.4 million franchise tender with Raiders

AP reports defensive lineman Richard Seymour signed his $12.4 million exclusive franchise tag tender with the Oakland Raiders on Saturday. The move means all of the Raiders' veterans are under contract for next season. The team announced the signing on its website, adding that the process of signing rookies would begin soon. By placing the tag on Seymour in February, the Raiders guaranteed Seymour a salary for next season of at least $12.398 million, which was the average salary earned last year by the five highest-paid defensive ends in the league.

Redskins add OT Brown in trade

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the New Orleans Saints agreed to send disgruntled offensive tackle Jammal Brown to the Washington Redskins on Saturday. Brown, who missed the entire 2009 season with hip and sports hernia injuries, signed his $3.62 million tender offer before the trade. He skipped the Saints' voluntary workouts this offseason because he was unhappy with the tender, along with the fact that he might have to compete with Jermon Bushrod to regain his starting job.

Saints' Moore signs 1-year, $1.76M offer

ESPN.com reports New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis says restricted free agent WR Lance Moore has re-signed with the club. Moore had resisted signing his one-year, $1.76 million tender from New Orleans until now because he was hoping to sign a longer deal.
