Bengals’ Palmer works to improve arm strength

The Dayton Daily News reports Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer looked good at minicamp last week, but admits that his arm strength needs some work. The quarterback’s plan to strength the arm is no ancient Chinese secret. In fact, the solution to the problem is a fairly easy fix. “Throw,” Palmer said. “It’s just like when a track guy needs to get faster. You don’t do 5,000 squats, you run and run some more. To get your arm in shape you throw and continue to throw. So I will be throwing all summer long as well as in training camp.” Palmer missed 12 games last season with a serious elbow injury. Now the former Pro Bowler is looking to rebound and lead his team to the playoffs. Palmer’s offseason preparation has included the OTAs and minicamp. These are the first steps in his return to prominence.

Bengals' Benson comfortable carrying the load

The Dayton Daily News reports when Cedric Benson was selected by Chicago with the fourth overall pick in the 2005 draft, the Bears were expecting big things from the running back. Benson had just finished up an illustrious career at Texas, where he received the Doak Walker Award as the nation’s top running back in 2004. However, the runner never quite lived up to the team’s expectations and things quickly soured. It seems as though a dark cloud was cast upon Benson’s career since his arrival in Chicago. He was constantly scrutinized and the negative publicity kept coming. Frequent injuries and run-ins with the law didn’t help his case.

Texans smart to extend GM Smith

The Dayton Daily News reports Earlier this month the Houston Texans signed general manager Rick Smith to a four-year contract extension keeping him with the team through 2012. This is a testament to the organization's commitment to winning as they continue to move the team in a positive direction. Smith, the former Meadowdale High School football star, is entering his third-year as the Texans GM and is quickly transforming the 2-14 team he took over in 2006 into a contender. During a phone interview with Smith he talked about the challenges of the position as GM and expectations of the new regime in Houston.
